Rois-Bheinn - "Promontary Mountain" - 882m, (Corbett)
Some Rois-Bheinn facts!
Rois-Bheinn holds jointly with it's neighbour, Beinn Oghar Bheag, the title of highest hill in Moidart.
At the base of the mountain is the small village of Roshven, which is a settlement that takes its name from a roughly phonetic spelling of Rois-bheinn. Roshven is famous for the Scottish artist, Jemima Blackburn, (1823-1909). Who was a notable victorian painter of birds. Two books about her birds are "Birds from Moidart" by David Douglas and "Blackburns Birds" by Rob Fairley. Jemima was a friend and pupil of John Ruskin and Sir Edwin Landseer, both of whom praised her work highly.
Charles Darwin refers to Mrs. Blackburn’s observations in the sixth edition of On the Origin of Species.
This was infact the second time that we had attempted to climb this hill. The first time we had approached it from the south but bad weather amonst other things had prevented us from getting right to the summit. This time the weather, (certainly at the bottom), was much finer and we thought we would try again. Braxony were accompanied by Preston on this walk. We approached the hill this time from the north-east and basically followed an old stone dyke all the way up! This wall was an amazing feat of construction, as straight as a die, over all kinds of terrain, a very handy navigational tool!
Whilst the weather had started off fine. It was pretty wet and windy by the time we got to the summit, so those wonderful views on the western side of the summit were entirly obscured. The trigpoint has gone now, however a few shards of concrete remain in a tiny cairn letting you know you have got there. We bid a fairly hasty descent from this one and as I recall this involved a fairly entertaining downhill run. Made even more entertaining by the boggy ground. Still we avoided twisted/ broken ankles and headed down to the pub for a swift half at the Lochailort Inn. We then caught the train at Lochailort station which took us home, soggy but pleased to have got to the summit this time at least!
